I am stuck between buying the G3258 and the 4790K, I have a gtx 970 as a graphics card.

My original plan was to buy the 4790K, but I've seen reviews of the G3258, and it seems pretty good.

My questions are:

1) Would it bottleneck my GPU?

2) How is its multitasking performange (eg. Steam, Game, Skype, Chrome)?

With the money saved, i could get some other good components.

Yeh, umm, why would you want to compare a $70 CPU, to a $400 CPU (AUD)???

The G3258 is decent when overclocked, but that's only because it's not that much of a bottleneck with the increased clockspeed.

I recon you go for a 4690K, it won't bottleneck anything available atm, and doesn't cost a fortune.

Edit:

Because the G3258 only has 2 threads, multitasking is a no-go (like, running Skype and playing a game *AFAIK*), the 4690K improves apon it with another 2 cores, and consequently threads, but the 4790K has the upper hand with a total of 8 threads.

in his case is a joke, with the amount of money in front of the i7, the G2 is a good cpu for PURE gaming, if you're planing playing, being on skype, facebook, teamspeak, listening to music on youtube,.. is worthless in that case even gaming and having youtube on with music + skype and everythign is gone :D, you understand?

it wouldn't do it :D it has 2c/2t. if the game uses 2c/2t .. those works 100%, is there space for more?! I guess not. Maybe yes let's say lol, but your frames will drop with 30%.. and is a joke in front of a i7 is what i ment lol, is a dirt cheap cpu for pure gaming. 100% recommanded in low budget rigs.

id recomend the 4690k I personally noticed no difference with the hyper-threading for the extra 100$ though for multitasaking. think about getting 16gb of ram with that 100$ you saved on your cpu

Dude, the only thing lower quality then a Pentium is a celeron and I haven't even seen those in computers anymore. If you have the money this shouldn't even be a question.

The Pentium is 3.2 GHz with 2 threads, that's 6.4GHz theoretically.

The 4690K is 3.5 GHz (which beats the pentium by itself) with 8 threads, thats 28GHz theoretically.

BONUS: The K on the end means unlocked multiplier, so 28GHz is un-overclocked. Squish in another 400MHz and thats 31.5 GHz theoretically.

Hopefully this will help you understand why everyone is saying the 4690K and 4790K

Gotcha. Its only a joke when compared to the i7s. Kinda like me to a t-rex or something and then a t-rex to godzilla. No hard feelings bro!

 4690K is an i5 so only 4 threads. ;)

I wouldn't say so personally. Surely the G3258 does not excel much at multitasking, but it surely does what it's supposed to do.

My old laptop, which is powered by a SINGLE-core Intel Celeron M 520, used to run so many apps at the same time; but yes, most of them were sluggish after a while.

kompooterz.

I had that cpu, I was playing  Tera, and just Tera which is an MMO, And on the moment I used skype with chrome, or Teamspeak with chrome, my fps droped and everythign started to lag. With a gtx 760gtx btw. For PURE gaming is perfect, but is not multistastink WHEN you game and do other work. If you pure multitasking, internet browser, watching movies, is just light speed. I wish some1 could do benchmakrs, multistasking and gaminf or streaming + gaming so you understand what I mean... :)

Its cool. I have a G3258 (now 4790K) and it performed really well in games when OC'd. For what it is and its price, its a really good CPU for a low budget gaming rig. But for multi tasking its not very good at all.

But it sure can OC! which for me was worth the small price just to push it as far as i could, until i could afford my i7

The i5 4690k or the i7 4790k are really only the two choices a gamer has to choose from. Until AMD comes out with something respectable. I have no idea why people on this forum would buy no K series chips considering everybody has after market air cooling or liquid cooling on this forum. The OP had a point in buying a $70 G3258 until he saved up for a 4790K.

Haha that's great. I just got a pentium so that I could use my rig until I could get an i7. It's at 3.1 now how far can I go do you think?

Nice. I've got a kraken so I'm thinking that should handle it.
