ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO

This is what it says on their specifications site.

*1: The PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCIEX4_3) shares bandwith with PCIe 2.0 x1 and M.2 slot. The default setting is Auto Mode, which automatically optimizes the system bandwidth. If you install a PCIe 2.0 x4 device, the system will automatically detect and disable PCIe 2.0 x1 and M.2 slot.

*2: The PCIe 2.0 x1 slots (PCIEX1_1/2/3) will be disabled when PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCIEX4_3 ) operates under x4 speed or M.2 mode.

*3: The supported functions depends on the CPU installed.

*4: These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported.

*5: 1 x USB2.0 ports at mid-board shares with ROG extension (ROG_EXT) port.

So if you put the graphics cards in the first two PCIe x16 slot, they will both run at x8 speeds.

Only if you put it in the third PCIe x16 slot (the black one), which is 2.0, it will "optimize system bandwidth", also, if you use that slot, it'll disable the PCIe x1 slots, but you won't be using it so it does not affect you.

3 is almost irrelevant since you are using a 4790K. The other points do not matter regarding PCIe configurations.

It will run your setup perfectly.

I plan on building a new system and in it I would like a Intel Core i7-4790K and 2 Gtx 980's running in SLI so from linus's video i understand they will be running in 8x and they cant run lowwer because then they wont support SLI so does this mean i can't add any other PCI using hardware like soundcards, wifi, bluetooth, ect...(I do know that i could get USB versions but i would prefer PCI).

Please explain if it can or can't?

If i remember correctly, they'll run in 8X 8X, and the other slots will be 4X (i think, let other people give some stronger answers)

ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO

*highfive*

I think it will run the GPU's with a lower banwidth to componate for the PCI cards, probably not that big a deal

Will this help? http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2240087/asus-maximus-vii-formula-sli.html
