I've put together a list of parts that I think should work pretty well. However, I've never built a PC before and would appreciate any and all advice. There are a few things I'm not sure of, such as whether the RAM will fit under the 212 Evo, whether the PSU should be 80+ Gold or if Bronze will do fine, or whether I need to add some fans to get better airflow and keep the build cool and working properly. If you can answer those and give me some opinions on the build I'd really appreciate it!

Approximate Purchase Date: Sometime in the next 7-10 days.

Budget Range: $2000AUD after shipping.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming, surfing the internet, watching movies.

 

Peripherals & Monitors: Looking to run a single 1080p monitor. I also need a mouse, keyboard and OS. Also, because the cases I’m looking at have no optical bays, I need to be able to install OS via USB. I’m pretty sure I can do this with Windows 8.1 OEM version (as per this article http://lifehacker.com/how-to-create-a-windows-8-installation-dvd-or-usb-drive-505769939) but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Parts to Upgrade: Everything. I’m using a crappy Asus notebook with Nvidia GT540M graphics… it’s really quite terrible.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes. Again, 8.1 OEM via USB? Yay or nay?

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Whatever is cheapest. I’ve compiled a list via PC Partpicker because it makes asking about it on here really simple, but I know some of the parts listed are cheaper on Amazon (Keyboard, CPU and SSHD).

Location: Melbourne, Australia.

Parts Preferences: Pretty sold on the GTX 970, seems like crazy good value for money. Picked out the MSI because of the colour scheme and negligible differences between Asus, MSI and Gigabyte cards in terms of performance.

Overclocking: It’s my first build, so I’m cautious to OC. Maybe in the future, but right now I just want to get the thing built and running properly.

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe in the future, so a MOBO that supports multiple cards is important, as well as a PSU that can handle two cards without ruining anything (not sure if TOO much power is an issue or not) when I’m only running 1 graphics card.

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, at least, that’s the plan.

Additional Comments: I prefer windowed cases because I’ve been trying to get a red/black colour theme going and I want to be able to show that off. Ideally I’d go for the NZXT H440 in red and black, but its $70 more than the NZXT S340 (in black), and the S340 looks pretty damn sharp anyway.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I want to be able to run BF4 on decent graphics settings above 60FPS. Looking at the 970’s benchmarks from all sorts of reviewers, I shouldn’t have much trouble with that. To more directly answer the question, I have a complete potato for a computer now, and want to build a respectable gaming PC.

Pretty decent choice all around, but I cant forgive you for not choosing an SSD at this price point :P get one of this: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz7te120bw

Also, if you plan to go SLI in the future, 750W is ok, if not, 750 is a bit overkill, you can run this system with a 500W PSU.

I'd love to go SSD, but figured a 128GB SSD and a 1TB HDD wouldn't be worth the extra money over a single 1TB Hybrid Drive. I mean, no matter what I use it's going to be a billion times faster than what I'm used to, so I went with the SSHD and hoped that'd be the a better option.
