I currently have a MSI 970a-g43 which has 2 PCIe 2.0 slots (one x16 which my current 7870 is in, and the other x4). Would it be worth it to pick up another 7870 off ebay for the x4 lane? I'd think the x4 2.0 lane would affect performance a decent amount. Or maybe just save up for a better single card?

I could do that, would probably be better then dealing with crossfire.

Yep, Crossfire isn't exactly great.

Sell the 7870 and go for a 970 and when the availability for a mobo / cpu upgrade is in your future - Haswell i5 4690k and any mobo from Asus or MSI that can sli 8x or 16x, that way in the future you could add a second 970.  Dual 970's have been showing performance comparable to 295x2's on some graphs.  So, definitely a worthwhile choice.

I'll definitely consider that, thanks for the help.

Id get a better single card rather than getting a second 7870. I had a 7870 crossfire setup at one point and having a better single card setup now is way better.
