I was wondering if I backed up an ENTIRE windows 7 home premium 64 bit system and wanted to use that data on a new windows 8.1 64 bit system, how it would be done. I don't want to have any OS files backed up from my windows 7 system either, how would I avoid doing that? Thanks.

When you open the windows 8 installer it gives you the option to keep all your data if my memory is right.

Can't upgrade Windows 7 -> 8.1 directly. You must go 7->8->8.1 in order to retain data without backing up.

If you're trying to migrate programs, don't. Some programs are reliant on registry entries and will be buggy or entirely dysfunctional without them.

If 7->8, yes. 7->8.1, nope.
