I'm looking a building a NAS for easy storage and file transfer in the house. I've done a bit of research already on building one for yourself, and I plan to buy parts as I can afford them. What I need advice on is what kind of hardware needs to be in it keep it stable for long periods of time. Do I need all workstation grade stuff, or will some cheaper consumer stuff work? I know ECC ram is suggested, but how necessary is it, as it will eat into budget I'd rather spend on hard drives.

Basically, get everything as dirt cheap as you possibly can.

In my home-built NAS, i run 2GB RAM, a super-cheap Intel Atom, an ancient HighPoint RAID card, and two 3TB drives in RAID 1.

Basically, just go cheap on everything but the storage and PSU. If you want data protection, get a cheap RAID card off Ebay and run RAID 1.
