I didn't know where to ptu this topic but since I think it's about peripherals...

I have a new PC, and my power supply is a Corsair AX860, and in my country we have some blackouts from time to time and I'm sure I need a UPS to protect my computer (and my monitor too xD).

So my questions are, how do you pick the right one? (I've already tinkered with APC's ups calculator and it shows that I need a 1500VA UPS, which costs $500+)

Am I making a mistake with the numbers? And, wich are the good, reliable brands?

Thanks in advance!

I have the Eaton Protection Station, and it is really great!

It has 800VA, and it is enough to power my 550w pc for ten minutes. It should be enough time to save your stuff.

You aren´t really supposed to game on a UPS anyways

Dunno about avaliabillity in your country tho

I believe you are looking into the more commercial/professional solutions for small business servers that have higher tolerances and much longer run times when power outages occur.

For most people a regular sized UPS or battery/backup is more than enough to run your computer for a bit before shutting down, you aren't really suppose to be running full power on one during a power outage as said. One benefit is still having extra power for routers and modems to give you hours of power to access the internet, via mobile phone or other battery devices.

Here's one that may be more suitable for your needs I personally have the 1300VA one:

I'm not looking to play during a blackout, I just need to be sure that when the power fails, i will have at least 5 minutes to shutdown everything, and that's the part that concerns me because i don't know what would happen if I'm running my computer at full load when the power fails and the UPS kicks in. I dont want any magic smoke coming out ot if :) but thanks for the info!

The APC looks great but some reviews tell something about having problems with psu with active PFC, which the AX860 has, is this an issue?

Also, how much power your computer uses?

I'm not exactly sure about the Active PFC issue that occurs, from reading it's regarding the difference between a true sin wave vs. one produced by a UPS. For what they say if they are not compatible each other the PSU will automatically shut itself down during an outage or brown outs when the UPS corrects for fluctuations. Currently I'm using an OEM PSU since I'm working out a system, but my old system was running a TX750 at around +/-500 watts using the UPS with no problems even during outages that occurred.

I'd actually be quite interested to know more if anyone has more information regarding this since I was planning to get a PSU rather soon.

Well on the purpose of science I'm looking for someone to lend me a regular UPS, I'm gonna try to hook it up to my pc one time and see if it works, just for the kicks. I'll let you know how it went :)

Hopefully the PSU is smart enough to not shut itself down when the backup or power correction kicks in since it kind of defeats the purpose of having a UPS.
