Random powering back up

Go to solution Solved by bmanzzs,

Most likely it is a bad PSU.

However, a computer can seemingly boot by itself or turn off by itself if the motherboard is shorting on the case. This can happen if you, say, forget to properly mount the motherboard to the case with the risers it came with. But since you stated the problem started occurring after installing the new power supply unit, then it's probably close to a 90% probability it's your PSU as the culprit.

I would re-install the PSU to make sure it is not touching the motherboard just to be sure. Personally, I would just replace the PSU asap.

Hi guys, Looking for some advice.

I've a okay gaming PC, Nothing crazy i5 and a gtx 660ti.

I got a new powersupply around a year ago due to my old one dieing on me.

Since getting the new one my PC will turn itself back on after been shut down.

Recently the new made a really loud pop, with blue flash as I flicked the switch off at the back to stop it from turning itself back on. All still works well after this, no problem apart from the turning itself back on.

Would this be a fault with the powersupply or maybe the motherboard wires? It was turning itself back on after the blue flash had happened so its nothing to do with that I don't think.

I personally think PSU but im not 100% sure.

All advice is welcome.

Thanks, Chebs

Not sure what brand this PSU is but it sounds like it's not a very good one. I've had a couple PSUs back when I went cheap on them turn themselves on again. The pop when you turned it off is definitely not supposed to happen.

The PSU is a Corsair ax860 so its not a bad power supply. Ill remount the motherboard and reinstall the PSU and check all the wires.

By "bad" I mean "faulty", not low quality. DOA.

Also, is it still under warranty? The "pop" sound you described I have encountered before and as JvHummel stated, that is NOT a good sign. If problems still arise after remounting everything, I would make sure to try and replace that PSU asap.
