Question on laptop CPU's

Go to solution Solved by vorticalbox,

all the laptops i have worked on normally have a thermal pad on a GPU chip, a copper bar running to the CPU cooler which normal sits right on the CPU.

Hi, wondering if the laptop heatsinks make good, direct contact with the CPU. Wondering as I'm thinking of replacing my laptop's thermal paste in the near future, and it'll make my life easier knowing if it does

Replace the thermal paste. They put way too much on laptop cpus and it is always hard as a rock.

They do but still need thermal paste. Go ahead and change it. On my laptop temps were down 8 deg. from changing stock to arctic silver 5.

That's what I'm thinking of doing

Do I need to spread it?

dont spread it.

just a drop on the chip then push it out with the heatsink.

I never do, just a little dot and it works fine. Remember that there is no ihs so any extra paste gets in the socket and can cause damage.
