So I shouldn't get the 770 and go straight for the 970. I only have about a 350$ budget for the card anyways so I'm leaning towards the 970 which assumingly will also cut down on the power bill.

Go straight for the 970. Not only is is stronger but the 4GB of VRAM as opposed to 2 (and actually strong enough to use it all) makes it an epic card. Alongside all the lessened power draw etc.

Hey !

 

Just been comparing the gtx 770 and the brand new gtx 970 and saw that the 970 outperforms the 770 in everything but the texture mapping units with the gtx 770 at 128 TMU's and the gtx 970 at 104 TMU's. Not sure if this is a big difference but I want to use either one of these cards primarily for gaming and video editing.

The 970 and 980 both have less cores/units than their 700 series counterparts however they are stronger on a core-for-core/unit-for-unit basis so that's completely fine.

For a single card solution the 980 will last you longer however 2x 970 is only slightly more expensive than 1x 980 ($680 vs $550) but that's a choice you have to make. If you decide to go 2x 970 a 750W PSU will do the job
