So, thanks to the help of some people on here and other places I've managed to put a custom recovery on my phone and even root it.  Now I want to go further, I've found a snapshot release of CM 11 for my phone and I want to install it.

I know how to make a backup on my recovery so thats fine I just want help with knowing where to put the zip files for CM and Gapps and if anyone knows any tips for me.

I'm running an HTC One and I have TWRP recovery.

Thanks guys

Just put them in any directory, preferably the root directory and boot into twrp flash the rom. That's how it has been for every single phone I have put a custom rom on. When you boot into twrp you browse the directory and find where the rom file and gapps files are so it really doesn't matter where you save them. Just as long as they're there and you know where they are.

Where is the root directory?

I've never seen a folder called root?  Thanks btw :)

Where is the root directory?

I've never seen a folder called root?  Thanks btw :)

Root directory is just the term for the highest folder on the storage device. IE you open up your phone on your computer (under lets say removable drive:A) The first screen you see with all those folders, that is the root directory. It is the beginning of where everything is saved. Just save them there or make a new folder saying "custom rom" or something lol. It doesn't matter. like I said when you boot into twrp you browse the phones storage for the file(s) anyways. Just as long as you know where it is saved that's all that matters.

Another note make sure you wipe the device, factory reset and wipe dalvik cache (all the options you can) when doing your first custom rom. You can try without doing this, I have had it work without wiping, but you run the risk of bricking your phone. Which I have also had happen when flashing custom roms.

Thanks!

No problem, wish you luck! I know it can be nerve racking and hopefully everything goes smoothly. I've rooted and put custom roms on probably a dozen phones, tablets etc. But I still get nervous every time after it flashes and I go to reboot. Thankfully things have gotten better and most of the time you can save yourself with twrp. Wasn't always the case though lol.

Chances are you downloaded a rom that wasn't for your device. Double check around on xda forums and make sure you find one for your specific model. That's usually what went wrong in my experience with failed flashes. If you made sure to do a factory reset, wiped all the caches before and after the flash. That is probably the problem, don't give up. Just try again and you'll get it working. :)

I downloaded the right one for my device.

And I wiped the caches before-hand.  I gave up after it failed because the phone is actually being given to my Mom, it was just I messed it up slightly before hand and needed a custom recovery.  I was just wondering if I could get Cyanogenmod on it.
