question about the multi gpu support

Go to solution Solved by Timopomer,

so if i have a geforce and it died and i bought an AMD in order for it work on the same mobo it should at least supports both sli and xfire ?

and if the mobo just supports SLI i should buy nvida and vice versa, correct?

1 GPU will work in any modern board, but SLI or crossfire differ

crossfireX is usually supported on most motherboards but SLI isnt

if my mobo only support lets say an AMD crossfirex can i put a nvidia card or not ? my gut tells me that if ever it will work it will decrease  the performance of the card and another question does a 3-Way/2-Way AMD CrossFire™and 2-Way NVIDIA® SLI™ Technology support is different from NVIDIA® Quad-GPU SLI™ Technology and AMD Quad-GPU CrossFireX™ Technology support but still can i put either AMD or NVIDIA cards?

Nope, if you want to use 2 Nvidia cards, your motherboard must be SLI compatible.  Just because it is Xfire compatible doesn't mean SLI will work.

SLI requires a minimum where the PCI-E slots runs at X8 speed electrically.

Crossfire(X) is a little less restrictive and will work with even PCI-E X4 speed.

Motherboards that have say... Have a PCI-E X16 slot and a PCI-E X4 slot... will automatically not qualify for SLI.

You can use nVidia graphics cards on a Crossfire(X) only capable board...but they can only run individually as two separate cards. This is goes for AMD cards on a SLI-only certified/capable motherboard.

A motherboard may be CrossfireX certified, but not SLI certified...and vice-versa.

Xfire and SLI are only when you use multiple GPUs at the same time.

You can switch between AMD to Nvidia if it is just 1 GPU that you are using.
