Hi, I'm having issues with connecting my new r9 290 to my computer. I am coming from a HD 7750 using a Corsair 600W Psu. I do not know much about power connections (first time using a graphics card that requires pcie power inputs), but the psu that I bought seems to come with a single wire that has two six pins and two two pin connectors. I connected the two six pins and one of the two pins into my graphics card, but when I try to boot up windows, all my components rev up at 100% fan speed and nothing comes up on the screen. Any suggestions as to what I should do? Thanks for the help in advance!

doesn;t R9 290 needs a 8pin connector and a 6pin connector?

do u plug the monitor cable at the right socket? (a friend of mine were plugging the cable at mobo's outputs, that;s why i'm asking, no offense)

last but not least, recommended PSU for R9 290 ain;t 700W min?

Is your R9 290 Set as the default GPU?

Try hooking the display out to the one on the motherboard and boot up and try changing your default graphics to your 290.

Not sure how you'd do it thought. AMD control panel? You'll have to figure that out.

A full list of specs would be nice, too.

Thanks for the replies guys. In response to Moglakos, I am sure that I plugged it into the right socket because the connector is an 8pin cable and there is only one 8pin socket on my psu. The r9 290 does need an 8 pin and a 6 pin, which is why I am using a 6+2 pin and a 6 pin (that should work, right?). The recommended psu is 700W, but I have heard of numerous people running it at way lower. In response to Sinned, my mobo does not have a display out (Lenovo mobo from a pre-built computer). My system specs are i7-2600K, 12 GB Ram, 120 Evo, Windows 7 Home 64 Bit.

if u connect your old graphics card does it work? Do u have another PC to connect your 290 or another empty HHD/SSD to connect  it to your system and try to install windows?

If I connect my old graphics card it works just fine. I do not have another PC to connect my 290 to unfortunately. I do have a spare HDD though, is there something I can do using that? I don't know whether that will work though because when I plug the card in and try and boot up the system, nothing shows up on the screen; when I use the old graphics card the fans rev for a second and then slow down and a picture is displayed, while with my new card the fans rev and don't ever stop, with no picture displayed.

do u have onboard graphics card?

If yes then try out this:

1. Turn off the computer and unplug

2. Remove Graphic card

3. Plug the monitor to your video output

4. Turn on the computer

5. Click on start and type msconfig

6. Select the Boot tab and click on the box that says Safe boot with minimal selected.

7. Apply then click ok.

8. DO NOT RESTART.

9. Shut Down computer and unplug

10. Install Graphic card

11. Turn on the computer (should boot into safe mode)

12. Go into Device Manager

13. Expand Display Adapter

14. Disable the Intel® HD Graphics 4000 driver. (DO NOT UNINSTALL)

15. Click the start button and type msconfig

16. Unclick Safe boot

17. Restart

The computer will restart normally and will no longer get the black screen. See if that works for you. I didn't mess with any setting in the bios. I am assuming that having two graphic driver install don't like to play well with each other

If you can;t continue after 11 step then try this one:

1)go to bios settings - set primary display device to PEG OR PCI E

i hope u will make it bro... i have to go to bed now more answer tomorrow :)

Hey buddy, I had the same problem in the first day of my 290. The solution is pretty strange, but the 290 is a bitch like that.

So what you have to do is, throw your old graphics card in. Then download this stupid program which is pretty useful. http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Run it and uninstall all Nvidia and AMD drivers from the PC. (I'm not sure if I put my 290 in or if I installed its drivers with my other GPU in, but sorry, you'd have to figure that one out. I suggest putting the 290 in first.

Good luck.

Yeah to me this sounds like a driver issue or would be the same effect if something wasn't plugged in correctly (but we know you plugged it in right, so I'm leaning towards driver issue.) I had this problem when I first switched from Nvidia to AMD, i was so excited i threw the new card in and forgot to intsall the drivers and nothing worked right. I did a driver sweep of all nvidia drivers a few times, installed the newest catalyst software/drivers, and boom worked perfect. It is weird though that it wouldn't work considering they are both AMD, but a lot of tech stuff is weird, so I would wipe the drivers, install the drivers that cam with your GPU (should be on a disk) then go onto the AMD site and download the newest drivers. Hope this helps.

Definitely sounds as though the old drivers MIGHT be the issue.

I just went from a GTX 780 to an R9 290X a few weeks ago and my standard method for changing any graphics card is to uninstall the card through device manager.  When you select uninstall it will ask you if you want to delete the driver, do this.  Then before you shut down go into Add/Remove Programs and dump any software specific to your old video card.

The other issue may be that Lenovo motherboard.  Make sure you are on the latest BIOS update for it.  What chipset is it?  You can find this out by running CPU-Z.  Do you see the BIOS screen or anything on-screen at all?

Also, a specific part number for the PSU you have would help us help you.  An R9 290 consumes WAY more power than your 7750 so maybe you are finding out that it just can't handle it.

First off, I wanna say that I made a mistake in my original post. I'm not sure whether this will make too much of a difference or not (it might, considering how everyone here is blaming drivers), but the card that I was using prior to this one was an ASUS 750 TI Strix. I have since retired that card and given it to a friend, and tried to install the r9 290 without clearing any drivers (rookie mistake, I know). However, I was able to start my computer and reach windows (as opposed to the black screen/no input signal-no BIOS-that I get with my 290) with the HD 7750 and uninstalled drivers for the 750 ti and installed catalyst along with the appropriate drivers for the 7750. I tried the 290 then with the nvidia drivers uninstalled but still no input :(. The fans of my components turn on and blow really loudly until I power off the system, so could the psu be the issue? It's a brand new cx600m that I bought from amazon .I have included a screenshot of the CPU-Z screen. I don't know how to update the BIOS (or how to check if the BIOS is the latest version), but I'll be happy to do some research online if you guys think that that might help. I'll try to delete all the drivers for the 7750 using the method that you told me and then try the r9 290. If that doesn't work, I'll try and contact ASUS tech support. Thanks again for all the support guys! Btw cawilkey, I'm loving the propic :)

To get as much info on the mainboard/motherboard, open CPU-Z and click the Mainboard tab.  post another screenshot like you did above.

I have attached it to this post. I also created a new thread because I saw the post requirements that I missed, so respond on that if you can: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/214224-fans-spin-no-post-lenovo-k330-prebuilt-with-cx600m-and-r9-290/page-2#entry2931955
