Laptop External SSD Performance

Hello people of the LTT community 

 

I am wondering if any laptop users here use an external ssd in an enclosure through usb 3.0 on their laptops. if so how is the performance? i have seen some on youtube and such (mainly Linus) and im wondering if it is worth it.

I have an Intel 520 120gb in a usb 3.0 enclosure. Tested the write and read speed with a late 2013 mbp retina and Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app. The write speed I think is quite low at around 170-200mb/s but the read speed is not too bad at around 470-490 mb/s. Copying large files is still way faster than a normal usb 3.0 hdd.

Just what i wanted to hear. i am going to pick up a 120gb 840 EVO for $85 to chuck my loading intensive games on (mainly bf4 and bf3)

If possible,just get a bigger size ssd,at least a 240gb. It'll be worth the money and hassle of putting it in an external enclosure. Games size are getting bigger and bigger now. 120gb will only last you for just a few months with all the updates and dlc coming out

I can get a 250gb 840 evo for $140 , im not entirely sure i need all the extra space though, as all i really need to put on it are bf4 and bf3 and thats it really

If you are on really tight budget, then 120gb is fine. Last time I checked,my bf3 folders was around 50gb+ with all the expansion packs.I dunno bout bf4 I think you should be fine with just 120gb.

The 840 evo from Samsung is good value for money.

Tbh,any recent ssd on the market is already pretty fast and reliable. My Intel ssd is already approaching 3 years now and still with 100% health and no issue at all. The 840 EVO is what most people will recommend you since it is a bit faster than the rest of ssd out there. Just pick whatever is within your budget. It will not make that much difference anyway since you'll be using it over usb 3.0 which is slower than a normal Sata 3.
