Need Help Fixing Xbox 360 Wireless Controller

Go to solution Solved by Powerbored,

Yes, it most certainly was me! I've been going crazy trying to get this darn controller fixed xD

Awesome, I'm glad you decided to jump on the forums and I'm glad you like it here, it's a great community.

I had a read through the thread are you still going to try and de-solder the trigger yourself?

The reason I don't like taking jobs like this is that Iv'e never actually worked on an Xbox controller so I can't guarantee I can do the job but If you're sure you want to go ahead with soldering but you really don't want to do it yourself I might be able to help.

However if you have a friend who has even used a soldering iron just a few times, they'd probably be as helpful as me.

Hi there,

I recently bought new housing for my Xbox 360 controller. After attempting to assemble it myself, I have tried to use my 'new' controller with my xbox 360 however keep encountering issues regarding buttons and triggers not working. First off, the bumpers wouldn't work so I managed to fix those but then the triggers stopped working properly, then I somehow fixed that and now my x, y, a and b buttons won't work. It seems like no matter what I do, something ends up not working.

After doing some research online, I think I now know what the issue is; the part kit came with replacement trigger mechanisms that fit with the new casing however in order to get the current ones off and put the new ones on, I'd need to do some soldering on the motherboard, which I do not know how to do. If you think you can help me, I'd really appreciate it! I have looked at YouTube tutorials regarding the job and they have all been less than 20 minutes in length, so hopefully that means it's a relatively easy fix.

Some pictures of what I'm talking about just in case I'm not making a lot of sense;

That white plastic part (above) is what I need to remove in order to put the new (fitted to the replacement housing) part on.

The picture below shows the reverse side of where the current trigger mechanism is soldered on to the motherboard.

If you know of any places where I can get this fixed for a relatively low price, I would really appreciate it! If you would like any more pictures, please let me know as I would be happy to provide them.

Thanks for your time.

Had something here about no location. Disregard.

welcome to the forums :)

EDIT: nvm the first part, I checked your profile to see if you had a location listed. IDK anything about Australia :/

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Whoops, my bad! I'm from the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Thank you for pointing that out and thank you for the welcome :)

No, unfortunately there were no instructions whatsoever. I looked at a few YouTube tutorials, one of which was pretty clear. There are three parts to it but only the second and thirs videos are relevant to what I need to fix.

Did it come with instructions of what to solder?

From what it sounds like it would seem not,

OP, you could always take it to your local PC parts/electronics shop and ask them.

Ah, I see what you mean. Sorry about that! Thank you for the tip there, I appreciate the help :)

Okay, what exactly did you buy? Was it just a new case for a working controller you already have?

No problem.

No instructions unfortunately. I looked at YouTube tutorials but even though they were helpful, I wouldn't have the first clue about soldering. I did think of going into an electronics shop however because I opened up the controller to put the new shell on, I voided Microsoft's warranty so I'm not sure that they'd still be able to help me..

Soldering in it of itself is really easy. You just need a soldering iron and the solder itself. The hard part is putting things in the right places.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd trust myself to do it however if it comes down to it I guess I'll have to! I've tried calling some repair places to see if they can help but they all want to charge a $50 flat rate and I can't really afford that much, I may as well buy an all new controller for that price.

I don't see why you would need to solder it in the first place though? It sounds like you just need to take the controller apart and put it back together again and make sure everything is a snug fit. Because I've had the same thing happen to me on my 360 controller.

I bought "full replacement housing" for my wireless controller. It comes with a replacement shell (instead of the original black one) and buttons that match it. Here's a picture of it all, sorry for the poor quality;

Unfortunately the new triggers and bumpers aren't the same size as the original Microsoft ones (that's what I get for buying unofficial accessories) so for it to all work, I have to use all of the new parts, not just mix and match some of them.

-snips-

Okay, if that's the same shape and size as the original controller you have no need to solder something on the board. I would really take it apart and put it back together again to see if it fixes the problem.

I've tried that a few times now and every time it's back together, something new goes wrong. It's usually the bumpers that play up though which I think is because the new trigger holders are (maybe) slightly larger than the current ones on it and because of this, it doesn't quite sit as it's supposed to. Sorry if that makes little sense.

Ohh..Okay. I get you now.

If I remember correctly you can take off the white plastic trigger pieces without needing to desolder something on the board. There should be clips that can depress and you can just pop it off. I'm not sure if the black box for the actual trigger input needs to be desoldered or not.

Yeah, I think the black box does need to be desoldered, I've clipped the top bit off but something down the other end (near the black box) is still holding the piece on there.

It looks easy enough to take off with a soldering iron if it's just the three dots. Since I'm not in Australia I don't know of any places, if they exist, where you could have someone do this for you. I think I'd be able to walk you through it though.

I might have to continue looking around to see if anyone is able to do it since I don't really trust myself with it. If I can't get help from someone else soon, I'll be sure to send you a message. Thank you very much for that!

Good luck on your search. If it helps, soldering is extremely easy and this would take about thirty seconds to do. :)

Just quickly on that note, do you think it'd be worth me paying someone else to do it then? The only thing I'm really worried about is ruining the motherboard.

If it's cheaper than buying a soldering iron and solder, of course. As for ruining the board, you have to pretty much stab the board with the iron.

One of my friends seems to think that you can buy a soldering kit for $10 from Kmart (discount department store) so if that's all I'd need to buy then that's pretty inexpensive. Okay so I don't really have to worry about ruining it then? I'll just make sure I'm really careful
