I'm thinking if getting a 4790k and was wondering if it would be worth the wait till broadwell for a desktop user.

I know the new way they are made is smaller from 22um to 14um but I'm not convinced the wait will be worth it

No, not if all you want to do is some gaming.

By all accounts, Broadwell should have:

 

Same architecture (so by extension, same or very similar IPC and overall performance)

Same number of cores

Same number of threads

Same number of PCI Express lanes

Same PCI Express revision

Same type of memory

Same number of memory channels

Same chipsets/motherboards

Lower power consumption

 

Oh, and improved integrated graphics.

 

You decide if it's worth waiting for

If you want integrated graphics go with broadwell... if not give yourself a 5% overclock and it'll pretty much be broadwell.

not much is known yet

 

right now we know that 3 new instruction sets will be in broadwell

and  that better GPU will be used

faster quicksync and support for VP8

less power

there are also rumours that broadwell wont even be coming to desktop, but rather be replaced by skylake
