Is my gpu really dead?

I was playing payday 2 when my screen just went black. I rebooted and it went black again just after the blue screen saying welcome. Doesnt going that far mean that its working? Can i do something to fix this? Is it a common problem? My gpu is hd 6850

And i know that my pc while gaming consumes about 250-300 watts and my psu is 600 watt also my friend brought his gpu to test the mobo and it was working perfectly (it was consuming less power and it was nvidia if that changes anything)

If it was dead it wouldn't display anything, if you have the windows disc try repairing windows with it

Sounds like a Windows issue. Have you tried booting off a Linux drive?

This does sound like a GPU issue. Tell me, did you get any "artifacts" (or strange objects/squares appearing on your screen) after you tried booting back up? If so that could be an issue with your gpu's VRAM

It could be dying, I had similar problems when one of my 660tis was on it's way out. (Luckily it was under warranty so evga replaced it)

No i dont... but windows 7 can do it without a disc. Ill try it if there is nothing else to try. Thank you.

Can you get into the BIOS? If you can then your GPU is probably not dead. You should try booting from a Linux or Windows install disk (without installing of course) to see if you can get any post-BIOS software to boot.

No nothing. It was normal untill it did it again

My warranty has expired... it was for 3 years and i have it for an extra 7 months
