Ok so I'm looking around for a new CPU, the problem is if I want a good upgrade I need to buy a new motherboard with a more recent socket and then I'm going to need an OS as well. Here is my current CPU and motherboard and RAM

Power Supply: 600 Watt

MOBO: N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX

CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 640 3.0 GHz quad-core processor

RAM: 5 GB  DDR3-1333     PC3-10600MB/s

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 660 2 GB OC Edition

Case: Stock HP Pavilion p6717c Case

(Don't want to overclock unless I can handle it without upgrading to more fans  or something and then nothing dangerous at that)

My budget for the CPU and Motherboard is under $200 cause I have to buy Windows 8 for the motherboard and I was looking at the

AMD FX-6300 Six-Core 3.5GHz CPU/Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P 760G mATX MB Bundle

 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9083412&CatId=11508

Now I know Intel is better but I have to spend more money for an equivalent number of cores and clock speed but it has hyper-threading so if you can find something that is as good or better for the price please tell me. I don't care whether its AMD or not as long as its within my budget and has good performance/price. I might do some light overclocking if I need to definitely nothing dangerous for my PC although I'd prefer that I don't need to.

Uses: I want to play Planetside 2 with better frames and then some room for future titles like The Division (hopefully good enough that I can counter Ubisoft's bad optimization) and other games that have high CPU demand.

My budget is under $300 for CPU, Motherboard and OS

what OS do you have currently? chances are you don't need to purchase a new one buddy..changing motherboard won't necesseraly means you can't re-install or re-use your current OS.

Also for planetside 2 and other similar games (MMORPG online) intel fast cores are better and something like a core i3-4150 would be a much better pick...here's what i would suggest:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4150 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($116.99 @ Amazon)

Motherboard: ASRock H97 PERFORMANCE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($74.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $191.98

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This is intel's latest chipset so chances are you could upgrade to a broadwell i5 or i7 down the road if you wish.

Spending a little bit more i'd suggest you get this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($187.93 @ OutletPC)

Motherboard: ASRock H97 PERFORMANCE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($74.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $262.92

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium and I don't have a disc copy btw this is a modified HP Pavilion p6717c I did not build the computer but just upgraded it so I never bought an OS. If there's a way I can re-use it I would be happy to know and how that works. I'm assuming it involves finding your OS files on your HDD/SSD and copying to a flash drive?

Also is Intels hyper threading really good enough that I can use a dual-core?!

Ok but where am I going to get the key to re-use it if it came on my PC already, I don't think its possible without a disc/USB drive. I believe that you can use an .iso and then use a program to make it onto a boot able disc or USB Drive.
