Short answer: yes

Long answer: due to the noise levels and ambient air temperature, it depends. Of course, your cpu won't melt, but I barely overclocked my FX-8150 with a single-rad closed loop water cooler. It would help to know cooling around your case and such, but as long as you torture test well and stay reasonably conservative, you should be fine.

The only way to really know is to find out yourself! Overclocking is a relatively safe operation (unless you go into the bios and set the multiplier to 30 :) ) and if you don't know the limits, you should go really slowly.

1) increase the multiplier by 0.5, boot into windows and run a 5 minute prime 95 test

2) repeat step 1) until prime95 fails a core

3) go to bios, up the voltage 1 step, boot, 5 minute prime95 - if none fails go to step 4), if one or more fails repeat step 3

4) Go to step one unles either

a: Temperature is a bit on the high side for your liking or

b: You are happy with the clock

6) Run a 6 hour prime95 test to make sure of long term stabillity

If you constantly keep your eye on the cpu temps (or set it to shut down if it goes above x degrees), you should be fine.

Happy overclocking,

Luke

Comp overclocker - Tinkerer - I thoroughly enjoy putting 12v into things that say 5v
