I am new to building PC's and this is my first proper build and I want to make sure I do it right. I am building a gaming pc and I need help choosing a cpu. I have £200 ($330) to spend and I was originally going with the i7 4790k but saw a techquickie video and now I am not so sure it is the best option. I am thankful for any response.

considering the fact that you build a gaming PC and you have a budget i'd recommend the core i5-4690K with a radeon R9 290 GPU.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

Thanks for the reply but with the GPU could you be more specific because I was looking for one. I was originally going with a GTX760 and trying to keep the overall price at around £750-800. So the i5 is better then the i7 at gaming. What about for things like watching films and video and general web browsing.

I looked up amd r9 290 on pc part picker  and it came up with multiple version and so I was asking which one i_build_nanosuits was referring to.

look for sapphire, msi or gigabyte cards they are all good..avoid asus and reference design coolers.

My specs

 CPU: i7-4790k

Ram: 8gb corsair vengeance ram

mobo:Gigabyte z97x-gaming 7

GPU: r9 270x

I can personally tell you that this cpu is awesome. but if gaming is your priority. go with and i5

I went with the i7 ONLY because of star citizen recommending an i7

Man, you screwed up your build.

Should have gone with an i5 and a more powerful GPU.

It is not guaranteed that star citizen is going to run better on an i7 than i5.  Game developers have been telling us to buy i7s for years, and for years, i5 still equals i7.  Heck, Linus even did a video and in the Star Citizen dog fighting module, the Pentium performed the same as the i7-4790k.  Here is the video, start at 4:45

I recommended an i5 to the OP.  I didn't screw up my build at all. i will be upgrading when NVIDIA releases their new GPU's.

Also this is not a gaming only build.

And yes multiple time, the devs recommend an i7. don't try to compare the unfinished dog fighting module like its a finished product. I GUARANTEE this i7 will outperform the i5 when the persistent universe is released. They have announced hyper-threading support.
