I am going to upgrade my Graphics card next month and am in a mental tug of war thinking about which card i should get, so, i did the  first thing anyone should do when they are in doubt. Come to the great people of LinusTechTips Forums. I wanted to keep the option of cards strictly nVidia because I am looking in to, maybe getting an nVidia Shield. But I am open to buy AMD cards if anyone can convince me.

I am in utter confusion whether to get 2 GTX 770s or a lone GTX 780 (The 780ti is out of my price range), and the only AMD card that has even come remotely to my mind was the R9 290X.

I would be grateful for any advice that you can give.

Thanks in Advance

The duel 770's will be more powerful, but I think its a bad idea to buy 2 cards straight off the bat as it leaves no room for upgrading. Get the 780 or 290x then in the future you can add another as they will be cheaper then anyway.

Get the R9 290x if you can deal with the heat, 780 if you can't.

Off the top of my head the 290x should perform better.

Don't get Sli 770 as a starter, only sli if you already have one of the cards, and you're looking for an upgrade without replacing it.

The 2 770's would yield the most performance but you would need to get the 4Gb editions to fully benefit from SLI. Also you will need to make sure that your PSU can handle the 770's.

And then there is also the problem that not every game supports SLI configs, some may allow you to play but load only one GPU, while others may not work at all with SLI (rare).

I could be wrong there though.

The dual 770's -if you are getting the 4GB editions- are a good choice, but as the above stated it would be difficult to upgrade.

Otherwise I would consider the 290X. I think that the games it ships with are a great deal, but if you aren't sure about the games then you cant go wrong with the 780.

The 780 is more powerful than the 290X at 1080p (why was this a quote?) but will be defeated at higher resolutions.

EDIT: The 290X is really close to the 780 and might even beat it in some cases. It would seem that I have forgotten how these 2 compare, wouldn't take my word for it.

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

The problem is that i am only 15, and am getting all the money from my dad as a gift for finish my IGCSE examination, so he will let me upgrade the PC in one go, so i might not be able to buy that card later even if its cheaper...

Some games/applications can't even utilize Crossfire/SLI properly. Just get the 290X or the 780(Ti).

I have got 770 SLI myself and I'd not recommend it. You are dependent on scaling plus two cards are louder, use more Power and produce a lot of heat.

Get a strong single card. This also makes it easier to upgrade later. GTX 780/Ti is a great choice - or the 290/X if you want to go AMD (but remember to get a model with a great cooler)

Just as an add on: I'm going to sell one of my cards, soon, because I game less than a year ago and performance is still good with one 770 ( A friend of mine wants to buy it and right now I can get quite a good amount of money for it). Also I am tired off all the heat and noise in my little room. Later, e.g. a year from now, I want to buy a DX12 GPU and only have to find a use for one and not to cards then. ;)

290Xs don't get that hot anymore because of aftermarket coolers.

290 or 780, either is good. they both pull roughly the same wattage, and put out the same amount of heat. the core of the 290 gets a bit warmer (internally due to transistor density), so Asus/Gigabyte coolers are not recommended for 290 if you want to overclock really far.

Dual 770s will be the most powerful and they are getting a price drop to compete with AMD's R9 285 launch. Personally I never recommend the R9 290X as the R9 290 gives almost identical performance in 90% of games while, at the same time, being cheaper and having better performance than a 780. Also dual 770s will probably output more heat than a single card.

They don't get hot, but they still kick out a lot of heat.

Just because the cooler is better doesn't mean the heat produced reduces.
