I have an AMD Phenom II x6 1100T Black Edition 3.3Ghz. I've had it for about a year now and haven't done any overclocking because I haven't had an adequate cooler. Now, with better AMD CPUs out now, I'm wondering if I should just invest in a new AM3+ CPU or invest in a cooler such as a Corsair H100 and OC my current CPU.

Any opinions?

If it can mean anything to anybody at any time, it means nothing.

I definitely agree with Smartz on that one, that CPU is more than adequate for the vast majority of gaming, especially if you overclock it with a nice cooler (such as the H100i). And plus you get the added benefit of having a pretty beast CPU cooler when you DO decide to upgrade your computer :)

The H100i is a great investment. You'll probably see lower temps. As for the CPU, the only CPUs that are AM3+, and that you will sea performance boost in, are the 8 core cpus. The 1100t will most likely beat everything except maybe a 6200 or 6300. However, the jump form an 1100t to a 6200 to a 6300 would be a waste of money. So, kepp your current CPU but upgrade to an H100i to overclock. If all you do is game, then 6 cores is already overkill. If you do video editing and rendering, the eight core CPUs will benifit you a lot.

If you have an extremely high end graphics card like a 680 or a 7970 the CPU may bottle neck it but unlikely. If it is a bottleneck seeing as the processor is a black edition you should be able to overclock it to high hell and back removing the bottleneck but in order to do that you will need decent cooling.

Cooling wise get a H100i or a Noctua NH-D14 which are both superior coolers and will be able to take the heat away from the CPU easily.

If all you do is game/school papers ect... that yeah that CPU is fine' date=' GPU,GPU,GPU that's whats for gaming.[/quote']

Yes that is a valid point but if you have the best GPU on the market and the worst CPU you won't be able to leverage the performance of the GPU because the CPU will bottleneck it.

I have a Sapphire 7950 OC. Not much overclocking there, either. I would like to because I know they overclock nicely, but, again, I'm worried about heating. I'm not sure if I'm getting a bottleneck or not. I don't think I am.

My recommendation is get an H100i and then OC your CPU. Much cheaper and more future proof than buying a new processor as the H100i supports multiple sockets so you can carry it on to your next build (hopefully), and is also cheaper than buying a new processor.

A 6300 wouldn't really increase performance by a very noticeable amount, if at all. Overclocking the CPU you have now would make it faster than Vishera 6-cores at stock speeds, and would put it close to 8-cores at the tasks you are using it for.

I agree with what most people are saying here, BUT, just for thoroughness you should monitor your CPU usage with a per-core monitor such as during intense gaming, and if you have cores pushing 90-100%+ consistently, then you *might* want to upgrade. I don't have anything to add as far as upgrade options that people haven't already said.

Let me ask you this BustinJustin, is you'd CPU currently not performing up to par? If not, is it worthwhile starting fresh on an AM3+ build, cost wise. If this is not the case, is it worth your time ad effort to upgrade your cooling? If neith of these scenarios are the casedon't bother with it. Thoughpersonally, just get the coolermaster hyper212+. Bestinvestment for me ever, cools my i5 2400k extremely well.

If you feel like you need the upgrade then get one because at the end of the day you have to use it so you should be happy with it. But either way I would recommend getting a high end cooler so that you can get the most out of your CPU whether you upgrade or not.
