So I'm moving into halls next week and I'm thinking of picking up a VPN service, what ones do you all recommend? Preferably I'd like somewhere outside of the United States, no logs, lots of populated servers and unlimited bandwith.

The only two I've seen are ProXPN and PrivateInternetAccess. Which ones do you guys use and what do you like about it?

Also, do you think it's better to use their in house .exe files for setup or pop into the Windows and mobile settings and edit it yourself?

I'd go for PIA, just use their installer for simplicity vs using OpenVPN etc.

I would but I'm going to assume this will need an internet connection at home? I'm having it switched off when I move out as nobody uses it apart from me.

What do you mean by "it?" The computer hosting it? That guide sets up your own VPN on a virtual private server from DigitalOcean. Basically a private VPN.

Well if I'm the only one on the server wouldn't it be easy for anyone to assume data coming off of that server belongs to me? Data is only encrypted between me and the server then goes to whatever website I'm on, if they're not encrypted then it's game over. If hundreds of people are on one server it's going to be very difficult to assume who the data belongs to.

It's a VPS. Unless you're doing illegal stuff you won't get tracked down.

And if I am doing illegal stuff?

Then you'll have the slimmer chances of being caught, unless your VPS host notices?

How much slimmer?

I can't give you an actual statistic on that. That said, if say, a peer, looks at their peers, and reports your IP (shooting themself in the foot too, but this is an example!), they'd be reporting a VPS, not your personal home IP. Either way, I personally host mine.

Why exactly do you need a VPN? I mean, if all you want is to secure your browser's traffic, there are pretty decent lightweight browser extensions available for it which use HTTPS proxying. (Zenmate, HTTPS Everywhere, etc.)

HTTPS proxying will protect your privacy is much much easier to set up.

Thanks for the advise but I do need a VPN, I have a lot of applications that move data over the internet outside of the browser and there's no way I'm doing any of that on public WiFi! :P

Well you are looking for VPN that somewhere outside of the United States and considering PIA which is based on US... proXPN VPN is a Netherlands-based VPN provider who offers a two-tier VPN service would be good for you but its bit expensive 6.25 USD/month ... I would recommend PureVPN service based on Hong Kong with over 353+ servers in 53 countries and Corporate consumers get access PPTP, L2TP IPSEC and SSL/SSTP protocols as well as the convenience of having a READY-TO-USE infrastructure setup for them. Read the Purevpn review here http://www.bestvpnservice.com/providers/30/purevpn.html

Thanks for the advise, I ended up going with PIA before I saw this but I'm rather happy with their solution so far besides the crummy Android application. Hopefully future folk will find this useful.

Astrill is usually great, but not all that fast. Should be alright though as I live in China so that slowness is expected. It is not cheap, and I have no experience with it in the US. But it has always been great for me, has solid customer support and supports next to every protocol that you'd want.
