I'm putting together a gaming rig and I'm not really interested in overclocking it. I already have a workstation with a 4770K that I have OC'd, but since my workstation has FirePro W5000 it wouldn't be ideal for me to use it for gaming. Instead I'm going to put a budget rig together with an Asus H97-Plus motherboard paired with a 4590 (and maybe a 270X for 1080p gaming).

Although I'm not interested in drastically overclocking (or overvolting) my CPU, I would be interested in slightly increasing my FSB to pull a few MHz from the chip. Does anyone know if H97 motherboards have this capability or not?

you can do it. but I find 101 is the cutoff point before stability goes out the window, and not just for the cpu.

Why not keep the workstation and just slap a 290 or a 780 in it? Instead of building a new system with worse parts..

Good question Shd0w2. My workstation is my livelihood and I don't think I can pair a pro card with a desktop card to get the benefit of both worlds. Plus, my workstation is MY workstation, where the gaming desktop would be for the whole family :)

As for stability, I would probably lower my RAM speed before increasing my FSB; but if I can't squeeze more than 1MHz from my bus, then I wouldn't really care. I was more curious if H97 had that capability. When I looked at the online manual for the board, I couldn't find such an option.

Thank you both for your replies, I really appreciate it <3
