Hey guys, so I am looking for a laptop for school and I am having so much problems looking for one. If anyone could help, that would be awesome!

Has to have a screen res higher* than 1366x768 (Like that should be banned)

Upgradeable to an SSD and AC Wifi card I have, also maybe my 8GB SODIMM I have

Acceptable battery life Good looking, maybe a backlit keyboard.

If anyone could help that would be amazing! Thanks :P

I agree. 1366x768 should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Anyways, take a look at the Lenovo Y40

To be honest, the problem is the "chicken and the egg" scenario. Having a Surface Pro 3 makes me realize how unprepared the Windows environment is for high DPI screens. Like I mean 1080p laptop screens don't suffer that bad, but they still do to some degree. By windows environment I mean of course programs. I have to download the beta Chrome version because the regular one still has incredibly small icons and text. And don't get me started on Steam.

And to top it off, the DPI scaling of Windows only works on those updated programs (like the Chrome beta). The rest just look completely blurry, like someone decided to anti-alias the whole program.

The thing is that 1366x768 belongs on a phone or at best a tablet, not a 14" laptop. The best resolution for laptops would probably be 1600x900 or 1080p. Anything above that also becomes flaky

Yeah you have a point. I think the best resolution currently would definitely be 1600 x 900 or 1080p. But if programs actually had support for HiDPI, then definitely 2560 x 1440.

I do agree that WIndows 8 isn't good for high DPI screens, but I have a HP Probook 4420s with a crappy 1366x768 TN screen. You can't fit that much on it, I have to trick Virtual DJ into thinking that its 1920x1080 so I can see all the UI elements. And 1366x768 would be good for a phone, more PPI

It surprises me that Windows doesn't scale properly after all these years. Look at Android, it scales pretty much perfectly between 5.5" screens that are 960x540 and 5.5" screens that are 2560x1440

Nah it's not Windows 8. It's the programs. I'm not too sure why people are blaming the OS? Like Chrome beta works fine, and the Windows Explorer is also fine. Icons are big enough and so are text. It's up to the developer to create a high DPI GUI, but because of the lack of HiDPI screens out there, most don't find it important.

Idk maybe I got the wrong idea. But Windows does scale fine for me. But the way the programs react to it is terrible. The regular Chrome scales fine, but they do it the lazy way. They just take the program and scale it up. So it looks blurry.

The left compared to the right. I had to fix this issue by downloading Chrome beta.

Also sorry OP for derailing the thread. Imma go now.

I was saying windows 8 because on my Asus PBQ287Q at work running at 4K I cannot read anything even in Windows like Explorer and the icons. Thats with scalling at high, I like small text and icons, just not that small

Huh interesting. I guess sitting from afar is much different compared to sitting at tablet length since the Surface 3 has a higher DPI.
