How is the Wargame series?

So I just started looking for a Total War-type game but set in modern times, and stumbled across the Wargame series. They look interesting but I have a few questions.

 

1) A lot of people say that they're REALLY difficult and complex. Is this true? How?

2) Is it comparable to the Total War series?

3) Difference between games? Red Dragon seems like it's all in Asia and the first two are with the USSR/NATO, but are there any differences? What's the best one?

 

I'd also appreciate any similar games set in modern (Cold War and after) times.
