Hello Linus Tech Tips members,

I've been building PC's for a few years now and I'm coming outta high school going into IT, i study at tafe and for for a IT tech support company at school, but but. Ive got some saved wish lists from my fav site here in Australia. People have told me though, I have no idea what I am saying. I can except that I did grow up building PC's learning from YouTube. All my custom builds have served me absolutely perfectly. Perfectly. So can someone please take a look at the bottom end, mid range, high range and extreme range wish lists i have here and tell me if these are gaming/video editing PC's at different price points? Just so I know that I actually know what I am talking about, and if i dont. Can you explain to me where I am going wrong?

All mine just worked, I tried them all

I'd suggest using PCPartPicker.

Use PcPartpicker and stay away from the H100i.  Horrible problem with mounting, it doesn't work for everyone.  Other good options are the H105, Seidon 240M, H220, H220X, Kraken X60, X61.

it's all over the place there are too much stuff wrong to just start explaining where and how you should save some money/cut on them...but your powersupply choices are all overkill (you don't need 700W to run a GTX 760 rig) why the 3570K...why an X79 with a 770 etc...it's wierd, and your avatar...wierd.

4x4gb is a no go, choose 2x8 instead that give you an upgrade path...a blue ray reader will burn and read DVD you don,t need to have both of them etc...

Your ''top range'' should be 4790K and GTX 780 or R9 290

Your extreme should be 4930K with 780ti or titan

hthe gaiward 760 is a reference design card, NEVER pick a reference design cooler or anything with a blower style fan.

the list would go on and on

Your bottom range machine should be based on AMD (750K + R7 265 for example)

Corsair PSU are overall overpriced and most of the time quite ''meh'' for the price, i would not recommend most of them as there's pretty much a better choice at every price point (XFX, EVGA, Seasonic, rosewill, silverstone...)

The H100i is a terrible value for the price and is quite loud, many air coolers with dual tower cost much less and are much more quiet and perform better (be quiet! dark pro3, noctua NH-D14, NH-D15)

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

Thanks dude :) I will do some more study than :) Just a question, you say my PSU are overkill, how exactly do you calculate what you need? I only have a basic idea of how to.

Bottom Range: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=wish_lists&wlcId=241817&action=wish_lists

Extreme:

There doesn't seem to be a reason for the build. Is it intended primarily for gaming, content creation, or something else? The case is far from optimal. From what I can see the drive tower will make it quite difficult to push air through into the main part of the case. I am not a fan of fan controllers, preferring instead to use the motherboard fan headers and fan control software that typically accompanies good motherboards. Since one cannot see the motherboard from outside the case Dominator memory is a waste. On could as easily use a decent value line kit. The GTX Titan is an odd choice, but not knowing what the system is being used for one cannot comment further on its inclusion. The H110 is an AIO (all-in-one) cpu cooler. There is no need for the Alphacool kit. The psu is far too large for the build. If you want to calculate psu requirements I suggest you use au.pcpartpicker.com to assemble the build or search the internet for a psu calculator.

Top Range:

Again, the purpose of the build is not clear. When picking memory it is generally better to select fewer modules as it puts less strain on the memory controller and generally leaves room for an upgrade without replacing components. So a 2x8GB kit would be a much better choice. The case would not be my first choice for much the same reasons as the previous build. I usually suggest holding off on the purchase of expensive aftermarket fans until the need has been established. I usually recommend that people use USB media readers. Most people only every encounter a couple of different formats and an external reader is much easier to replace when new formats emerge. Not sure why there are two optical drives. The single BluRay should be sufficient as it will also read/write DVD and CD. The Corsair RM line of psu are not that good. There are numerous competing models that do a better job. Again, the psu is larger than needed for the build as listed. While the cpu cooler is decent, the red doesn't really color co-ordinate with the rest of the build.

Mid Range & Bottom Range:

Waste of money. Buying two year old tech rarely makes sense.

When one wants to develop a build it is important to start with a clear idea of how the system is to be used. It is a tool after all - so buying a hammer to cut boards is not the best of ideas. Once the usage is understood a budget needs to be established. Given this information one can then begin to work on an actual part list.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

you could use an online psu calculator if you have no idea they are somewhat good approximate for what you need but generaly speaking a 550w psu is plenty for a single card machine (unless you go with very powereating parts like FX 8 core and R9 290 then you want 600w) and for dual card usualy 750w is enough (800w again if you go big amd rig and custom loop with pumps and stuff)

here, look at this vid:

as you can see a top of the line machine (single card) overclocked barely reach 350w under full load running unigine and cinebench at the same time, that does not mean you want a 450w psu cause you want headroom, but 550w is a good place to start for most gaming rig. specs are given at 2:20 but you should listen to the whole thing.

this system also have watercooling and many fans and stuff...350w...amazing huh...now, 750w for a single 760...nope.
