After running the tests, I've come up with some interesting results. This is only with one title, and I would like to do some more tests with a different game that has PhysX. I believe Metro Last Light does. I also just used the integrated benchmark in AC. Here are my results:

CPU PhysX:

  • Min. 23
  • Max. 123
  • Ave. 53

GPU PhysX

  • Min. 43
  • Max. 123
  • Ave. 80

An interesting thing I noticed is that my GPU didn't hit 100%. It banked at 97% according to MSI Afterburner. CPU is a 3570K clocked at 4.2GHz. GPU is clocked at 1.2GHz maximum. My GPU is also a 660 Ti. Next, I'm going to run Batman Arkham City without PhysX and see what happens.

What happens when I don't have PhysX enabled? This.

Min. 83

Max. 235

Ave. 167

Pretty staggering results. Some people here have the idea that PhysX is gimped on the CPU. That's true...but it also seems that PhysX is also gimped on the GPU as well. Just not as bad. The GPU also once again banked at 97%.

wow that's insane you gain 100% more performance just by disabling PhysX, that's seriously taxing.

For the average FPS, I actually gained over 100%. But for minimum and average, it was pretty close to gaining 100%. I actually didn't think PhysX was this taxing. I was wrong. At least on this title. Next I'll be doing some Metro Last Light tests. I believe it has an integrated benchmarking program - also, Bioshock Infinite uses PhysX as well. And that has an integrated benchmark. Looks like I got some more titles to test.

So... Batman AC has a very bad implementation of PhysX?

It would seem so.

I won't be able to test BL2 because whenever I set my PhysX to CPU, it's grayed out in BL2 and can't use it.

Then I have to bring out my mad hacker skills. But to be real for a moment I can try to edit some files and see if I can get it to work.

Okay.

Made it work, but i don't have the time to benchmark it currently so if you want to give it a try just do this:

First :

Access

C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\Config\WillowEngine.ini

Search for:

PhysXLevel

Change

PhysXLevel=0 <- (low)

to either:

PhysXLevel=1 <- (mid)

or

PhysXLevel=2 <- (high)
