Microphone Static Issue

Recently I bought a modmic 4.0 to replace my zalman clip on mic and while the audio quality has increased the static is still just as bad. Initially I thought it was an issue with the microphone but after removing all possible sources of noise in my room it didn't help, so i thought it might be the driver so i re installed it, no such luck. My question is do i need to buy a sound card (I'm using on board atm) to get rid of this static? Is the onboard soundcard the cause of the static?
