1 1/4 = 1 5/20 , multiuplying by 5/5 is the same as multiplying by 1.

but seriously, just multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators.

Oh wait this is all the same thing? :D

 

First thing you do is add the "big numbers" -> 1+2 =3

Then get the fractions on a common denominator. 

1/4 and 8/10, common denominator is 1/20. That means you have to multiply 1/4 with 5/5 and 8/10 with 2/2. Then simply add these resulting fractions

I believe so, the telling fact is the last line of numbers reads (when converted to decimal) as (1 + 0.25) + (2 + 0.80) = (3 + 1.05) = 4.05, at least to me. The preceding lines show how to get the faction-based values of the final line.
