Hi guys,

I'm planning to make an HTPC for the first time.

I'm trying to save as much money as possible so I think an AMD APU will be the way to go for the processor.  Problem is, I'm not familiar with any AMD products and their graphic card naming system so when I read about an AMD chip with a certain integrated graphics card, I'm not really sure if it's good.

It will mostly be used for consuming HD media but also some light gaming.

Any tips on the processor I should use?  Or even a parts list if you have any suggestions.  I'm trying to keep it around $300.

Many thanks!

I suggest replacing the AMD stock cooler for noise reasons. If you are placing the HTPC in the same room as the TV you tend to notice humming fans more than usual, especially when watching a movie. I did this on mine because for me that stock cooler was untolerable.

Also look for a PSU with a quiet fan or fanless. Just something to keep in mind.

[Case] Phanteks Eclipse P400S TG (Air Mesh) || [CPU] Ryzen 7 5800X || [Cooler] Dark Rock Slim || [Mobo] ROG STRIX B550-F || [RAM] 32GB Trident Z RGB 3600MHz CL16

[GPU] XFX MERC319 Radeon RX 6950XT || [SSD] 1TB WD SN550 M.2 NVME || [HDD] 6TB Seagate IronWolf 7200 || [PSU] Corsair AX850

[Display] LG 27GL850 @ 2560x1440 - 144Hz || [Mouse] ROG Gladius II || [Keyboard] ROG Strix Flare (Cherry MX Red) || [Speakers] 2.1 Logitech Z-3 || [Fans] 6x 120mm Corsair LL RGB

Hi adriel604, I'm not 100% sure of the costs for a low budget htpc computer but would you consider looking at nucs since they're reasonably cheap, have enough processing power for light gaming, watching full hd content & low powered.

Thank you, I will consider those as well if it is the better option for the wallet.  I WANT to make an htpc because it will be more fun but yea if it is significantly cheaper the responsible thing to do would be to buy a nuc haha

I don't anymore, I sold one, but the reason was because Uncharted 2 multi-player was online only and I wanted to play with friends in the same room on my smaller 32" TV while I use the 55". That, and split screen sucks, separate screen is much better.
