US temp cell subscription

Yay, vacation time!!! And yet another roadtrip in west-south (CA, NV, TX, AZ) area of USA, but this time I wanna make a twist. I want mobile data so I can surf whenever I want to without having to run for free hotspots.

 

So help me, I am an eurotrash resident, and we have about 3 weeks of vacation in USA.

We will preferably bring our own device.

Preferably pay as you go with unlimited data.

But  can understand unlimited data is not like here in Europe where you actually get full speed all the way, so will the 4G/LTE subscriptions be lowered to 3G or are we all the way down to dead-slow EDGE?

Calculated budget around $50 for entire period.

 

I have had my eyes on Walmart's Straight Talk service or Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk, but no clue if they are good, or if the coverage is good or there are better options.

 

So any US users that can recommend what to choose?

I have a a cheap data only plan from t-mobile and use google's phone service for calling and texting , it is hard to setup though, just get a pay as go burner style phone, not sure which compaines are good or not
