So with the new gtx 800 series on the horizon I'm thinking that when I get my new gtx 880 maybe I should go to 1440p.... So that was the plan until I looked at the new prices.... Wtf like from searching they are £300-450 why?? You can get a good 1080p for like £80 and isn't 1440p an increase of %77 of pixels so why is it so expensive?

Because Samsung never liked the 1440p thing and didn't push massive production towards it. The resolution never took off.

On the other hand, with 4k production Samsung is getting their shit together, probably by next year getting a decent 4k panel would be at the same price of a 1440p display.

Because 1440p is built primarily for professionals (it's not a mainstream resolution).  Professionals are willing to spend more. These monitors are also of much higher quality.

4k has the luxury of being the next television standard that's being pushed, so its being pushed to the mainstream market who are not willing to pay a high price.  This is why you have pretty cheap 4k monitors right now (some that are cheaper than 1440p monitors), but they use terrible panels.  It'll take years to get good quality 4k monitors.

Thrive on change. Embrace volatility.

£80 1080p monitors are god awful TN pieces of shit with limited warranty. High end 1440p monitors are IPS, have high colour accuracy, great warranty, lot's of inputs, good build quality, multi-axis adjustable stand etc etc.

The number of pixels in the least important factor in pricing. You get what you pay for.
