I have a 4690K (currently not overclocked, with stock cooler)

Mother board: Asus Z97-A

PSU: Corsair CX700M

All just built with the latest drivers all up to date.

I am running Aida64 system stability test.

The test runs fine for roughly 10-30min with the temperatures never exceeding 65 degrees and the clock speed remaining a constant 3500MHz

However, after about 10-30min the cpu drops from 100% right down to 0-5% and the clock speed starts to fluctuate between about 500-1500MHz but the temperature remains roughly 60 degrees.

Aida64 then warns that a hardware failure has been detected and stops the test.

The CPU then remains in a state with a clock speed of between 500-1500MHz until the system has been shut down.

This has happened three times in a row, I done a full system down between times.

Third time:

When starting system stability test:

Problem occurring roughly 10min in:

I have no idea what is happening!

Someone please help!

I haven't tried overclocking it yet, its just straight out the box.

Would I need to adjust voltage levels before overclocking? Shouldn't it run fine out the box?

It 'should' but Aida64 is unrealistically punishing. It may be OK with default settings with normal usage, but Aida64 is not normal if you know what I mean.

I understand what you mean, but I tried changing the voltage and just the same thing happened

Damn. Right, what happens if instead of Aida64 you use Prime95?

I just finished running Prime95 Small FFTs for 30min with no problems.

The load remained at 100% and the clock speed remained at 3500MHz (sometime clocking up to 3600MHz)

All cores remained below 80 degrees for the entire test, averaging about 70-75 degrees

So I guess there was a problem with Aida64?

But I re-downloaded it, tested it again and had the same problem??

Sounds like your CPU and hardware are fine.

Quick question? Is this a clean Windows install? Sounds like a software conflict of sorts.

Yes, I downloaded windows direct from microsoft

I assume you got all the drivers installed, including chipset and stuff right?

Try playing games that are demanding on the CPU, if they play ok, then it could be some weird incompatibility (just like my system which is rock solid except if I try to run Coretemp, then the whole thing freezes).

Yeah, I think it must be some weird incompatibility. I've been playing Planetside 2 which I think is CPU intensive and its been running fine.

Thank you so much for all your help.
