People use it as if they were the same thing. However:

Quad SLI usually refers to 2 dual gpu video cards in SLI. For example 2 GTX 690s.

While 4 way SLI refers to having 4 single gpu video cards in SLI. For example 4 GTX 680s.

 

In both scenarios you have 4 GPUs running in SLI.

4 way SLi = using 4 GPUs

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Quad sli is two GPUS on one PCB, eg. the GTX 690 or Titan Z two of them would make Quad sli, s a single GPU on owhile 4 way sli on one PCB, eg. 4 GTX 770's or 4 GTX 780's together makes 4 way sli :)
