Hey guys, so i was wondering, would someone get a benefit from using a discrete gpu vs intel hd graphics if they were using programs such as photoshop and adobe elements? And if so, how much of a benefit?

Oh and its medium to light editing. Thanks:)

You probably won't need discreet. My dad does video editing and photoshop work and it all seems to run smoothly on his integrated graphics. They have gotten a lot better than they were. Whatever you do, don't buy cheap junk and get less for your money (for gpu).

THERE IS A HUGE BENEFIT. Integrated graphics are just for things like web browsing. Gpus are dedicated just for graphics. You will have a huge performance increase from using a GPU

It would be a huge benefit to have a discrete gpu instead of hd graphics. It would be okay to use temporary if you don't have a lot of money to spend on a gpu right now.

Well the thing is, my aunt is an entrapaneur and is starting a business, it's just her atm and her computer is an old xp machine that she has been using photoshop and effects on. It finally is dying and she wants to get a pc that will last her along time. (She doesn't quite trust me to build her a pc) and she got quotes on dell computer but they aren't the best for the price. But in HP I can get her an i7-4770 with 12 gb ram with 256gb ssd with a 1Tb HDD for a little over $1100. And the only gpu options from HP are the gt 720 and the gtx 745. So I didn't know if it would be worth it for the extra $100-$150.

Don't buy an HP or a Dell. You'd be better off with a custom build company like Falcon Northwest, Digital Storm or iBUYPOWER. Even their lower end builds would be better than anything Dell or HP offers. Try your best to convince her that building a PC is the best option available in terms of price/performance though. She could use the saved money for her business.

photoshop and effects would be okay to use hd graphics, just make sure to have enough ram for it.

No get it without. Those are not very good cards and you could get way better for that same money. You can always upgrade later.

The HD4600 is pretty good. More than enough for Photoshop or video editing. As a separate card it's somewhere between R7 250 and 260 and better than 750ti. So you need to spend about $200's worth of gpu to get any value by not going with integrated graphics. The next version from Intel is supposed to be even better. This is with the version that's on the i5 and i7 series. Lesser Intel's are not quite so impressive.

Built in graphics are pretty damn weakbut for light editing it should be fine, but if you do intensive stuff, be sure to get a better GPU

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

groans Intel graphics are pathetic. for watching videos they're fine, but if you want to game, fugheddabaddit. All it is is a graphics controller that can't really do much more than render things on a screen. GPUs are much more versatile and powerful than that. Having something like a 7870 will boost your graphics performance tenfold, easily.

My laptop's APU crushes Intel HD 5000 without breaking a sweat. It's just that terrible.

1) The HD5000 series hasn't been released yet. Rumour has it that it's going to be on the Broadwell chips.

2) What's the proper FPS for Photoshop? Video editing? None of you have addressed the question, just are gamer fanbois,,, get a gpu! get a gpu! get a gpu! His aunt is on a tight budget and using onboard graphics will allow for a much more capable machine that she can afford.
