Basically, I want to do something with a Raspberry Pi (Or a few for that matter), for my senior project. I know that the Raspberry Pi is a pretty versatile product, but I don't know exactly what I should / could do with it. I was thinking of maybe putting a few together and building a server out of it, or running PLEX off of one. Not really sure, but I still have to do it as a school-project.

Basically I'd like to hear some ideas from you guys, also sorry if this isn't the right section for such a post.

I love the idea of using a Raspberry Pi as a Media Center.  Both tweak town and lifehacker have done similar guides on this.  Check out this Tweaktown guide.

Also, LifeHacker has lots of ideas on various uses of the Pi so I would start looking there.

P.S. Sounds like an AWESOME school project.  Good luck to you!

I agree, an HTPC with Raspberry Pi would be really nice, there are several OS that you can put into it. I think the best is XBMC. And you can download an app for your android smartphone and control it with that. Then you have an awsome, compact media center!

My dad was also pushing towards that idea, suggesting that I set it up with http://rasplex.com/ and maybe Ubuntu as an operating system.
Although, I'm a little bit hesitant on this, as it sounds like a great idea for personal-use, but whatever I do, I'll need to do it for my senior-project (So I have about a year to do it).

I was thinking of maybe building a server with a couple of them, not sure how to approach that though, or even if that's the best idea.

If you want to go with the server you have to find a way to connect them in parralel, that is if you go with several of them. I have no clue how thats done.

I have noth Plex and XBMC running on my system and even though Plex is a much smoother set-up, I usually recommend XBMC for it's more robust functionality.  Plex is great if you're going to stream from a NAS though.  If you want a full set-up, I would go with Ubuntu and Install XBMC.  You can also add a Plex plug-in to XBMC.  If you're not streaming or wanting a full OS, you could alsways try XBMCbuntu, although I don't actually have any personal experience with it.
