I have a AMD Athlon II X4 640 and want to overclock it. What are safe temps for this CPU to work under? It currently runs about 47 degree's doing basic things and 39 degrees idle.

Forgot i was ripping a movie in the background so 47 degree's is not basic.

Run a benchmark like cinebench and check the full load temperature. If it's anything below 80 you're perfectly fine, if it's over 80 but below 90 you might want to look into a new cooler, if it's over 90 get a new cooler asap. You might want to get an aftermarket coler anyway because the stock one isn't exactly brilliant and it tends to get full of dust and toast your cpu if you aren't careful.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I have a aftermarket fan and use prime95 for stress testing. When I looked up the temps it said 51-71 but had heard other temps were good. thanks.

71c is the max recommended operating temperature from AMD. As long as it doesn't go above 60c whilst gaming or whatever, you're safe for the long-term.

1.45v manual voltage, try 267 on the base and see how it goes in a stress test. I believe K10 is rated at 62c

Those are intel temps, AMD's can't go over 74c.

To OP, run a benchmark, intel burn test is a good one to get MAX temps, if your max temps range from 50-60 go for it, but if your max temps are close to that 70 threshold, get a better cooler.

Oh, didn't know that. Weird considering the tdps for amd cpus are generally higher :P

AMD cpus are generally better at transferring heat from the die :) large die space + solder + bigger ihs = more surface area to take heat away :)
