*Photoshop noob alert*

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 on Windows 7-64 bit.

I am trying to use the dodge and burn tool on a circle I just made. To make the circle I used the eliptical marquee tool. When I try to use the dodge or burn tool nothing happens, however when I uncheck the "Protect tones" option it works but not with the desire outcome because I dont want to change the tones. Although, this doesnt happen when I use the dodge or burn tool on a still image, only on things that I create.

Can you help me fix this? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

If it's a solid color on a separate layer, apart from the rest of the image, nothing will happen because the burn and dodge tool have nothing to go off of.

I am doing exactly what the guy says in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovlCLzJFG0s

He uses the dodge tool @2:20.

You can barely see it, but there's a gradient to the shape he's working with.

To do that, you need to apply a gradient to your shape (the following is just the way I'd do it), put it into a layer folder, merge the folder with itself and then do what he's doing.

When I make a gradient overlay my shape which was green now becomes black and fades to white going from the one corner to the other.

Is there an other way to do it? Also where did you see that he uses a gradient?
