Hello linustechtips users,

I am planning on buying a new gaming computer within the next 6-9 months. I would have liked to build my own but I'm confident enough to do that yet despite having a high level of knowledge of PC parts in the current market.

I have found the following PC from a computer store which is not far from my house. http://gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_no=XGAMER_II_POSEIDON

If I were building this rig myself I would have used an i7 4790k and GTX 780 Ti instead.

I would like some advice on value for money and if it is a good system. I mainly play FSX, GTA San Andreas, and GTA V when it comes out.

Thank you in advance

welcome to the forums,

don't be afraid to try building your own rig!

if you are really afraid, you should probably have a shop near you that can assemble it for you.

for example i can buy all the parts from the shop and they put it together for me.

so it removes the shitty price/performance factor of prebuilts since you hand pick the parts your want.

also, a 4790k and 780ti seems overkill for what you are playing.

So... what's your budget and location? And try to build it yourselves if you can :P It will be much better and fun to do.

Also for a gaming build you dont need a 4790k, and I still think the 780Ti is way too overprice so I always choose a 780 instead, or switch to R9 290/290x if the person I build for prefer AMD

My rig: Intel Core i7 4790k | MSI Z97 PC Mate | GSKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866MHz | ADATA Premier SP550 480GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB  | MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 | Thermaltake Versa N21 | Corsair CX550M Semi Modular PSU | AOC G2460PF 144Hz | Logitech G502 | GSKILL Ripjaws KM780  | GAMDIAS HEPHAESTUS V2  PCPartPicker | Old Build Log | New Build Log

These guys are right! Thats a good PC, but its fun to build your own, don't be scared about it! I was terrified about it, and got it done in 2 hours easy for my first build, and now im fixing PC's for my whole family, its for the experience and knowledge.

My budget is currently $1500 AUD but am willing to go up to $2000 if necessary. The store is in Brisbane not far from my house.

I think I will pick out the parts and try to build it myself, if that fails the store can assemble the PC with the parts that I bought for me.

I have looked at some of the build guides on the linustechtips channel, which made it look a bit easier than what I thought it was.

I will pick out parts and try and form a shopping list.

Ok so I made a shopping list of part I want but I'm not sure if everything is compatible or will fit in the case. Please feel free to recommend different parts because some parts I picked randomly because I couldn't find one that I recognised.

I might use a different store where the parts may be cheaper but I would prefer to use this store because if I ruin something I can hopefully just return it without having to post it.

Again, you dont need an i7, get an i5 4690k instead. And with that budget you can do much better:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($272.00 @ CPL Online)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($198.00 @ CPL Online)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($103.00 @ Centre Com)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($84.00 @ Centre Com)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($93.00 @ Centre Com)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB Superclocked ACX Video Card  ($699.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Total: $1663.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-08-17 20:30 EST+1000

I choose the 6GB version of the 780 in case you want to move to a higher resolution, but if you want to stick with 1440p or less then get a 3GB version instead, will be 100$ cheaper

My rig: Intel Core i7 4790k | MSI Z97 PC Mate | GSKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866MHz | ADATA Premier SP550 480GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB  | MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 | Thermaltake Versa N21 | Corsair CX550M Semi Modular PSU | AOC G2460PF 144Hz | Logitech G502 | GSKILL Ripjaws KM780  | GAMDIAS HEPHAESTUS V2  PCPartPicker | Old Build Log | New Build Log

If you want even better price:performance, you can move to a FX-6300 from AMD, it's not quite as fast, but plenty good enough for what you're playing.

Other than that, this build is about as good as it gets for your price point :)

Thanks for your help really appreciate it. Your list gives me a great starting point on a good system. Now that I've discovered pcpartspicker it makes it much easier to compare different rigs.

Now I know what parts I need just need to watch some more videos how to build them.

I may stretch the budget and get an I7 4790 or 4790K because FSX is a very CPU intensive program, but other than that the list you provided looks great thanks again

If you want more performance on a budget, AMD chips are better value, but have higher TDPs and no integrated graphics - Maybe you could try them out with a good cooler that'll give you quieter operation and better looks. Also, AMD is intending to drop prices come September so you could use that to lower the cost of your build.

IMHO of course, the i7 4790k is great, and the i7 4790 is great too if you don't intend to OC and want to save a few bucks.

Yes I know where Umart is I remember buying my monitor from Umart I will definitely look there thanks a lot

I think I will need to look at aftermarket cooling as well because it does get a bit warm in my house in summer
