Hi everyone I was wondering if someone could help me out.

Recently I purchased a new router since I was not happy with the one provided by my ISP as it wasn't that fast. So I went out and purchased a WD Mynet n900. I mainly got it because of the dual band 2.4 + 5. As some things such as my phone support the 5ghz band while some older laptops I have do not.

But anyway what I noticed was the fact it had a USB 3.0 port on it, so I plugged in a 16GB 3.0 flash drive and configured it for FTP use. I can access this through my computer by FTP into the local ip (192.168.1.1) but I was wondering how I could do this from another location, not on the network.

The reason for this was so I could have something like a Google Drive/Dropbox solution. I uploaded some videos I wanted to share on Google Drive but I quickly ran out of space, I was wondering if there was also a way to give access to the FTP server that was easy for people who don't know how FTP servers work. So it would be simple as sharing the Google Drive link like I did previously.

One more thing is when remotely accessing the server I assume an app like Filezilla would be required but is there a way to do this through a web browser for somewhere where applications cannot be installed. This would be useful for school where I can't install any applications.

Thanks

Forward the port 21 to your router (192.168.1.1), check if there is a setting that allows remote connections because this feature could be limited to local use.

You wont have fancy links like Dropbox/Google drive etc... for that you need to have a web server, you will be limited to using FileZilla or any other ftp program. Many browsers now support ftp through them, its not pretty, but it works.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)
