Buzz Sound before POST

Go to solution Solved by GaiusDax,

Update: I found the fix. A simple BIOS update seems to have fixed the problem. The current BIOS was "FB" and I upgraded to "FC". nothing in the BIOS info looked as if it would cause something like this but I have seen crazier things through my years in IT. Thanks for the input guys.

Hi Guys,

Here is my issue. With in the last 3 Months I noticed that when I start my PC up it makes a Buzz sound right before it goes to POST. It last about as long as a POST beep and is about as loud. FYI: it is not a distorted POST beep because the normal beep follows it. It comes up fine and I have not seen any other issues. I have narrowed the sound down to the internal speaker witch i have changed with a different one just to check. For the life of me I can not figure out why it is doing this. The only changes that were made in the past 4 months is I moved to a new case (Fractal Design ARC Midi). This upgrade was done a good month before the buzzing started. Any ideas/help would be awesome.

Things that have been tested:

-PSU has been checked with a tester and it tested fine.

-Video card was swapped out

-The second HDD was removed

-The internal speaker was changed

-CPU cooler was changed

-Booted PC with no fans plugged in other than the CPU fan and I also tried a different fan for the cpu cooler while doing this.

PC Specs:

-Fractal Design ARC Midi (Case)

-GA-990FXA-UD3 (Motherboard)

-AMD FX-8350 (CPU)

-H60 CPU liquid cooler

-Nvidia 660 TI 2gb (Video)

-Antec 650w 80+ (PSU)

-OCZ 128GB (SSD)

-WD Green 1tb (HDD)

I think its the HDD turning on.. my one used to do that too.. try opening the case and listening for the source…. Maybe its some fan.. But i think its the HDD… If not it may be coil vine ( if the buzz is not mechanical) or something is rubbing in somewhere… Or some fan maybe damaged or pushed a bit and it vibrates when it starts and then stabilises maybe?

Hi there, sorry to hear about your issue.

There might be a few reasons for this buzz sound you hear when starting the PC.

As z3kron suggested, this might be caused by the CPU fan, but since you have tested it I would suggest that you check if everything is ok with the hard drive by running Data Lifeguard Diagnostic.

You can download it from the link provided below. It is also recommendable to make a back-up of your data.

Normally, if the PC passes the POST and you don't hear any similar buzz sounds afterwards, everything should be fine.

It is not the HDD. Note above that it was removed when testing all the parts. sorry I should have made that clear the "second HDD" I listed is the WD Green. My only other drive is my boot drvive (SSD).

Also I am sure now that the sound is coming from the Motherboard speaker. I pulled the motherboard out and set it up on a test bench to make sure it is not a grounding problem in the case. I unplugged the speaker and no buzz. I tried another speaker and it also makes the sound. I am leaning to it being a issue with the motherboard itself but not sure what or if it is a sign that something bad is on the way.
