Hey guys! So I have this friend who gave me a Pentium 4 in my fucking school! I wasn't really sure how to take it safely home, so I just wrapped it around a cloth and put it in my pocket . I hope it's good.

Well the problem isn't really that. I just wanna know of the Pentium 4  works on my configurations of CORMAC. (in signature)

Will it work on MSI G31TMP21? Hope it does.

If more info is needed, then please ask so :)

Thanks in advance :)

lol yes. I've not yet checked it though. I hope it's not bent.

I don't know about the bent thing, but if it was not bent, will it work in my mobo?

I imagine it would work. That's a 775 board if I recall so pins aren't an issue on CPU.

So you say it'd work?

CPU isn't on the list but it has Pentium D support so the microcode should be there.

It better support it. Well, what all changes do I have to do after I put it in the socket? BIOS? Probably some Drivers update. What else?

I don't think that CPU is compatible with that motherboard.

Intels supported chipsets for that CPU:

http://ark.intel.com/products/27455/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-516-1M-Cache-2_93-GHz-533-MHz-FSB#@compatibility

Intels supported CPUs for that chipset:

http://ark.intel.com/products/31913/Intel-82G31-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller#@compatibility

Edit: A little more info on the topic. The LGA 775 socket had several variations, which were not cross-compatible in any way. The CPU support of a specific motherboard could be identified by the CPUs that worked with that chipset, and vice-versa. I wouldn't risk putting a CPU that isn't compatible into the socket as I believe some of the sockets were even wired diferently.

Can't hurt to find out.

It has netburst microcode on the board (presler) so it could work.

What's the specific model of current CPU? odds are the terrible netburst ipc + long pipeline won't make this much of an upgrade

Depends how much you value the board and CPU. Unless you can find someone else who can tell you what happens when this processor is put in this mootherboard (or at least one with the same chipset) then you don't know what's going to happen. It's most likely just going to fail to post or spit out some error, but it could damage the CPU or the mtoherboard in some way. It's up to you, but I wouln't do that with hardware I actually value.

Well I tried a Prescott (I think it was anyway) in my G31 board and it just wouldn't post. but that board only had support for conroe.
