Hey guys, so I need to use this oem computer from bestbuy for a while (until I save enough for a new build).

Since the computer only has 4 gb of ram(2x2GB config), I was thinking about upgrading it.

If I was to buy an 8 gb ram stick and put it in along with the 2x2gb sticks inside, would the 12 gb of ram be viable (increase in performance)? What other options do I have? For my new computer I am building later, I really want to get 16 GB in there.

I really like to multitask and I usually have tons of tabs open along with a game and maybe some other programs (2 monitors) and the 4 GB isn't enough. I could just buy a 2x4GB set, but I am looking at future performance.

Thanks in advance.

ALSO any links to ram will be appreciated. I live in Canada. :)

EDIT: It is a desktop

Just make sure the ram your getting now will be compatible with the motherboard you will be getting with your custom computer

Great but how can i get the most performance out of a 1x8GB stick for now.... should I do 1x8 + 1*2 or 1x8 + 2x2 or just 1x8?

The current 2x2GB sticks are 1333 mhz and I was thinking of getting an 1600+ mhz 1x8 GB ram right now.

pretty much it but I'd do dual 8gb sticks so the channels are full

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

One question I still have left is will the mobo support 1x8 GB of RAM in a single slot..

yes but it wont be as optimised and I would recommend getting rid of the old ones

I know about the dual channel but I am upgrading to 16 gb later (next year) and I just wanted to have sufficient ram til then.

Do you intend to upgrade beyond 16GB?

So just the single 8 GB RAM and don't put in other ones?

Yeah, because you can get some very strange behavior when you try to mix and match RAM.

Umm.. I am thinking of keeping 16GB until DDR4 prices drop.

Then it sounds like 2x8 is your best bet for performance or 4x4 for slightly less performance and probably slightly cheaper price tag.
