So after drooling over the Steam Machine and looking at how it comes apart on ifixit (https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Steam+Machine+Teardown/20473) I came to the conclusion, why cant this be 3D printed?

All of the internal shrouding should be easy, but why not the case its self? Im not sure what the avg bed size of a home 3D printer is but if some one knows can you post it. I would really like to give this a go.

Steam did mention when they first reveled it that they would release the CAD files but I havnt heard any thing about that since then.

Does any one on here have access to a Steam Machine that can provide detailed measurements of the case and maybe we could build a prototype.

They are around 15cm^3 or 6"^3 on average.

Largest consumer one I have seen is around 25cm^3

Intel i7 3770k @ 4.5GHz, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H, Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB Windforce, 16GB G.Skill - NT 1600MHz, 250GB Samsung Evo SSD, 2x 1TB Seagate HDD, Corsair H100i CPU cooler w/Noctua Fans, 4x SP120, Fractal Design Define R4, LG W224T, Func MS-3, Apple Numeric Keyboard

I think it would only take ~60 hours to print all and when you factor in how long it takes to ship and the time you have to work to be able to afford to buy one I think I would be compable.

Thats a shame as the dimensions are 30.5 x 31.5 x 7.5cm

It could be made to snap or glue together though, may make it a little bit larger but its possible

Cost is a limiting factor too... quality 3D printing is expensive, when people say it is really cheap they mean in comparison to having injection molds made for one-offs.

I'm sure its come way down, but when I was in college we could use the schools 3D printer to print anything we wanted... but it was $90 for the first hour of printing and $60 for each hour after that. I printed a stripped upper receiver for an AR15 and it took 6 hours (but was a school project so I didn't have to pay).

You could build a 3D printer and print it yourself, but you are still looking at about $600 minimum in parts for a decent printer and likely still $50 in filament.
