gpu upgrade, help :)

FatalityDiablo
Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

I would wait, not because I expect anything gamechanging to come out but because I firmly believe you should keep a gpu for at least 3 years unless your needs change drastically (e.g. you want a 4k display). That said, if you really think your card won't cut it for another year, the 280x is a very good choice.

Hi there,

I got following problem: My current gpu is a gtx660 OC, but now with a 1080p monitor I do realize that it's power is starting to be not good enough, might be okay til end of 2014, but not 15/16.

So my question is, shall I get the ASUS Radeon R9 280X DC2T, or wait for the next AMD line-up?

PS: I don't want a nvidia gpu anymore.

ty in advance :)

You never know what will happen in the future and if you want a GPU now who cares about 2016 ;) ?

I´d go with a R9 280X now because it is nothing but a 7970 on steroids, but a good reliable card! And for 1080p just awesome.

Actually, after a little think, you are right. Will just OC it for a little more boost and get a new gpu early-mid 2015.

Haha, I thought about that too, but I dont think my 550W golden PSU will handle

edit: mhh, according to a german retailer it uses max. 130watts, makes sense since its is 6pin only so that is 50 max. + pci e is 75watts.. lol

You could but I'd recommend you getting a 650-750W instead

I just checked, it needs 24 A and 130W at max, my PSU offers 2x 25A with 540W combined.. You just made me drop 96,90€ for a used gtx660 on eBay, congrats!

Good choice. SLI GTX 660 is a more powerful than a single R9 280x.
