Nvidia GTX 285 Question

Today i saw a Nvidia GTX 285 at the shop for $55 AU and i was wondering what the performance on the 285 was like because i was thinking about putting it into an old pc so that when friends come round they can use that.

 

The old computer currently has a Nvidia GT 120 1gb in it which is useless, It also has a 400w power supply in it so will it even run the 285 properly and if so what kind of performance will it have in games at 720p or what would it's modern equivalent be? or is the 285 rubbish and shouldn't even bother.

 

I have absolutely no idea about this card at all, so i would like some feedback on this.

it's okay. my friend said his uncles 285 could run bf4 1080p ultra 60fps , but we all know it's bullshit

You're better off in a gtx 750 or r7 260x.

The 285 is around 45% of the performance of a GTX 760, which aren't good odds. Try to go at least a 600-series card, even if it's more moola.

It is about as fast as a GT 640, get a modern card.

It will perform well but you will need a 550W PSU at least

I'd say 1080p maybe 30fps on medium/high on BF3

Edit: USD = $51. What PSU do you have? Depending on the PSU I would say get it, get but upgrade the PSU first, or just deal with it.

My old system (i7 860, GTX 285) was getting 30-45fps in Far Cry 3 at 1080p, medium settings. It's aight. Not that good by todays standards.

Tom's Hardware had it running at 40FPS on High 1080p in BF3. For $51 USD, I would take it.

Well thats what i was thinking as most of my friends are used too console graphics anyways they wouldn't notice any difference and it's only $55, the only thing stopping me is the 400w power supply in the old computer which probably isn't enough to run it.

Well that's not really a problem. I know you're from 'Straya and it's little more expensive down there but I think you could buy a Corsair CX 430W for pretty cheap and it should be enough for the system but won't blow up the system like the old PSU might. But even though it performs well for it's price it is ancient.

I had a GTX285 and it served me well over 5 years. I loved it and still love it now for its years of service but I honestly wouldn't recommend it in today's context. You would be better off with a 750ti.
