Hi,

So a couple of weeks ago i've decided to build my own gaming pc, and i've started watching a lot of video's on how to build a computer.

Last week i've ordered everything and today it all arrived. I started unpacking everything and getting ready to build and checking the manuals. But when testing outside of the case on the box the motherboard came in, plugged in my PSU powered it on and after 2-3 seconds the PSU made a clicking sound and the PSU fan and CPU fan stopped spinning. Then the same clicking noise happened and PSU and CPU fan started spinning again and it kept going like that, So i turned off my PSU swapped my RAM and same problem. I have no idea what's going on here ;/

 

So there's currently no OS installed, there's not even a hard drive or a GPU plugged into it yet.

I've also had my monitor plugged in but nothing showed up and the little beeper that came with the case was plugged in and didn't make any sound either.

 

Current parts (the rest shouldn't really matter as they aren't plugged in anyway..)

MotherBoard: GIGABYTE H87M-D3H

CPU: Intel Core I7 4790

RAM: 2x 4GB Crucial BallistiX Sport 1600 DDR3

CPU Cooler: Corsair H110

PSU: Corsair CS750M

 

What i've tried so far after reading similar problems online:

Switched RAM to different Dual channel

Reset CMOS (jumping with no PSU attached by holding screwdriver on it)

Pull out battery of the motherboard for about 5 minutes and put it back in

Checked to see if there are any pins bent on the CPU socket (there aren't)

 

What i suspect it is myself:

DOA* motherboard (this motherboard has no LED to show activity) or maybe a short in the motherboard

DOA CPU

The backplate of the H110 has these sticky cushions to keep it in place, but i had to place one of the sticky pads on some of the solder that comes out of the back of the motherboard. (though why would this be conductive..)

 

If anyone has any idea on what's happening, it would be greatly appreciated. Sadly i don't have any other PSU/Mobo/CPU to test.

Check that the 24 pin is not damaged and is securely plugged into the psu and the mobo. This happened to me and that was the issue. Try another wall socket as well.

Check that the 24 pin is not damaged and is securely plugged into the psu and the mobo. This happened to me and that was the issue. Try another wall socket as well.

 

It's pretty secure into the Mobo, since it's a Semi-modular PSU the other end is basicly inside the PSU. The 24pin connector looks OK from what i can see with the eye (if there's a way to check if that's broken i would like to check that). I've tried 3 different wall sockets now, the same seems to happen.

Disconnect everything in the mobo. I mean everything. And do this: http://www.corsair.com/media/cms/Blog/Testing_your_AX_Series_Power_Supply/Pix5.PNG

The switch on the back of your psu will then control if the psu is on or off. So when connecting the paper clip have the psu in the off position. It is safe. I did this with my watercooling to have the pump and nothing else running. Just make sure nothing is connected.

This would only test the 24 pin on the PSU, (which i forgot to mention it allready did) but could i leave the paperclip in the 24pin on the PSU and connect the 8pin to my motherboard header, would this test anything? (i don't really want to take out that 24pin if it's not necesairy as it's pain in the A to get out >.<)

Was about to suggest this.

 

By doing this you can check if the power supply is faulty. If it keeps short-circuiting then you need a new psu. If it doesn't i would say wait till you have all your components and just do the build. I've had problems before by not having everything there it causes problems. I would just do it all outside the case and see what happens. Good luck man.

It actually tests that the psu is able to power on and none of your other components are causing the issue...

It actually tests that the psu is able to power on and none of your other components are causing the issue...

The PSU is able to power on without restarting itself, i did have an extra fan added to the PSU as it said some PSU's needed atleast something to power.

By doing this you can check if the power supply is faulty. If it keeps short-circuiting then you need a new psu. If it doesn't i would say wait till you have all your components and just do the build. I've had problems before by not having everything there it causes problems. I would just do it all outside the case and see what happens. Good luck man.

When i checked my psu earlier it didn't seem faulty could keep spinning aswell as the fan i had connected onto it.

Also, i do have all my components, and i'll try to connect everything, thx for the info ;)

Well, I've included my HDD and SSD and my GPU but it still does the same thing (my GPU Fans will spin with the PSU's fan if that helps)

So everything spins and whatever then it stops and restarts? Have you tried getting into the bios? You have connected all of the wires correctly, cpu power, 24 pin and everything?

Yes basicly it starts up (fans start spinning) for about 2-3 seconds then it dies out, when everything has come to a stop, it restarts again, with a clicking sound comming from the psu (making me think the psu goes into a protection from a short, but it's on a cardboard box so i have no idea what's going on). I would've liked being able to get into the bios, but it doesn't even Post, or atleast not as far as i can see, as there's no LED on the motherboard itself, and the beeping thingy that came with my case (which i've attached to the correct header) stays silent. the wiring is all correctly connected (don't really see how you can improperly connect them to be honest.)

Just incase you would of forgot something not done incorrectly aha. Sounds like your mother board is faulty. Guessing you don't have a spare to test everything else like your cpu, ram, gpu etc?
