My monitor is a Asus VG278HE

You are probably using single link, here is a link to a dual link DVI cable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812816012&cm_re=dual_link_dvi-_-12-816-012-_-Product

Also make sure to plug in the cable into the Dual link dvi connection on your gpu (i assume both are dual link, just check to be sure).

I had the same issue getting my rig setup, just bought some of these as the local radio shack wanted $30 for one

Odd, should be able to do it, assuming it's true dual-link, and not just pinned for dual-link (there is a difference, and it happens a lot)
