Hullo,

Asking on behalf of a friend,

His Macbook pro 13" is constantly overheating when simply idling or word processing (i.e. ~100 degc) and obviously the fan ramps up accordingly.

He's had it for about 2.5 years (I think)

Is there any way to fix this? Or is it wrong software detection?

It does quickly get hot to the touch, but I'm not sure if it's actually hitting the reported ~100 degc.

I suspect that it could be deteriorated TIM for the cpu and so the heat isn't able to transfer properly, but not sure.

Could there be any other issues that cause this sort of ridiculous overheating?

Home is where the heart my desktop is.

2.5 years is on the older side for laptops, especially if they are used on surfaces that can leave lint and such in the vents. If it's one of the non retina models, I'd open it and check. Maybe blow canned air through the vents. If I remember correctly they are up near the screen on the non retina models. Unfortunately, heat is quite noticeable on MacBooks due to the metal body. Feels warmer than plastic.
